Antenatal Care

Pregnant woman learning colostrum harvesting technique from midwife Perth

Antenatal Care in Perth

I offer midwifery support before your baby arrives. The weeks before birth are the best time to prepare for breastfeeding. Most women don’t get any hands-on guidance until they’re exhausted and in hospital, and by then, the window to establish feeding well has already narrowed. Antenatal care with me gives you the knowledge, the skills, and the confidence to start strong.

What Does Antenatal Midwifery Care Include?

As an endorsed midwife, I provide private antenatal care in your home, tailored to where you are in your pregnancy and what you want to feel prepared for. Appointments are unhurried, one-on-one, and focused on you.

Antenatal care with me can include:

Midwifery checks

Midwifery checks

Routine observations and assessments to check on you and your baby. Blood pressure, fundal height, foetal position, and general wellbeing. This is particularly valuable if you want more continuity and one-on-one time than you’re getting through the hospital system.
Colostrum harvesting

Colostrum harvesting

From around 36 weeks, I can guide you through hand expressing and collecting colostrum, your baby’s first food, before birth. Having a store of colostrum ready can be invaluable, particularly if your baby needs extra support in the early hours, if you have a planned caesarean, or if you have a condition such as gestational diabetes that may affect your milk coming in. I’ll show you how to do it correctly and safely.
Breastfeeding education

Breastfeeding education

I’ll walk you through what to expect in the first 24–72 hours, how to recognise a good latch, what normal feeding frequency looks like for a newborn, and how to spot early warning signs that something needs attention.

Birth planning

We can talk through your birth preferences, what to expect at your chosen hospital, and how to communicate your wishes clearly with your care team.

A Note on Colostrum Harvesting

Colostrum harvesting is one of the most valuable things a pregnant woman can do to prepare for breastfeeding, and it’s still underused because many women don’t know how to do it, or don’t know they can start before birth.

I’ll guide you through the process in person, show you the correct technique, and help you build up a small supply that’s ready if you need it. Having that colostrum on hand can make a significant difference in those first hours, especially if your baby has a slow start or needs supplementation.

Medicare Rebates for Antenatal Care

As an endorsed midwife, I am eligible to provide Medicare-rebated care to women up to 6 weeks and 6 days postpartum, and antenatal care may also be covered depending on your circumstances. This means the cost to you may be significantly reduced. Call me to find out whether your antenatal appointments are eligible for a rebate.
